​​Alan was born and raised on a farm in rural Kansas. After a short career in auto mechanics, he obtained an entry level position as a surveyor. Instantly falling in love with the profession, Alan pursued the education and experience requirements to attain his Kansas license in 2023. Continuing his education, Alan received his Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) credentials in 2024. After almost 20 years of experience, Alan enjoys collaborating with other surveyors and mentoring young surveyors.

Elevation certificates are National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) forms used to verify compliance with regulations, rate insurance and support requests for letters of map change. This session will provide background on the NFIP and why these forms exist. We will go through the forms line by line and discuss how to fill them out. There will be special attention paid to building diagrams. Class will conclude with a brief description of how to use an elevation certificate to request a Letter of Map Amendment (LOMA).
