Roads, Highways, Streets and Easements

Thursday, January 8, 2026, 10:10 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

This class will discuss issues related to rural roads, state highways, platted streets and access easements that surveyors deal with on almost every survey. The class will include if the adjoining road is owned by the public agency, or is just an easement. Implied access easements by prior use or necessity will be discussed in relation to requirement in the minimum standards. Reversion of streets and roads, describing access easements in the description, and how to show easements on the plat will be discussed. Roads will be covered in detail, including various ways that public roads are established in Kansas, section line road openings, road records, common problems in determining the location and width of roads, and staking right-of-way lines when the road is in the “wrong” location.

Center Corners and Subdividing Fractional Sections

Friday, January 9, 2026, 8:00 a.m. - 9:50 a.m.

Subdividing sections usually requires establishment of the section center, then subdividing the section in accordance with the intent of the GLO plat and Kansas law. This class will review history of state statutes on section centers, and acceptance of previously established center corners. The class will also cover subdividing sections along the north and west side of a township (colloquially called fractional sections), and
true fractional sections along Indian reserve boundaries, standard parallels, state lines and navigable rivers.
